Tying Fishing Knots - Why Learning How To Tie Fishing Knots Is So Important
Posted by Magic Fishing on Tuesday, April 26, 2011
If you only know one method of attachment for example, what do you do when you switch from worm fishing with gang hooks for trout to fishing a crank bait for bass? In this scenario if you only know one fishing knot you are more than likely using a knot that it much less strong than it should be in one fishing situation or the other. There simply isn't one "magic knot" that will work in all fishing situations, although many anglers tend to think this is the case.
Tying fishing knots is an extremely important skill to have as an angler and knowing at least three different methods of attaching line to tackle is of the utmost importance in my opinion. In reality an angler should know more than three, but three will suffice for most fishing scenarios.

Common Fishing Knots - Tying a Lure to the Line
Posted by Magic Fishing
It's good practice to know at least a couple different trustworthy fishing knots. A lot of people use the simple granny knot technique, but tying the fishing line over and over like that creates weak spots in the line and can break easily.
The most common fishing knots used by fisherman when tying a lure to the line are the Palomar, Trilene, Snell, and Clinch knots. There are also the Albright, Wedge, and Baja knots too. Only the first three knots will be discussed.

Obviously, when it comes to fishing lures, trying to figure out which is the best can be a tough decision. There are literally tens of thousands of choices available and navigating through those choices can be a tall order. With this article I hope to cut through some of the BS and give you some real world information, and even some suggestions as to the effectiveness of this or that fishing lure. Lets begin our search for the best fishing lure, shall we?
The Best Time To Go Fishing
Posted by Magic Fishing
So, how do we figure out which times are the best times to be on the water? This is actually much simpler than you might have imagined. It has to do with paying attention to the weather and moon. These two forces of Mother Nature have as much to do with the best time to go fishing as any single two factors, even what type of bait or lure you choose to employ.
Many anglers don't realize this simple fact. The best way to determine the best time to go fishing is to learn the ways in which these two factors impact fish and fish behavior. Don't worry, there's no need to become a meteorologist or astronomer. All you have to do is learn the basics, which can be accomplished with an hour or so of study. The best time to go fishing is directly related to these two forces of Mother Nature.
Finding the Best Fishing Knots For Beginners
Posted by Magic Fishing
Choose the right knots for your own style and for the fish you are trying to catch, and tie them correctly, using either printed instructions or a video lesson, and be sure to take your time when doing so. Once tied, lubricate the knot with a little liquid and then draw it tight.
A good fishing enthusiast only needs maybe three or four reliable fishing knots in their arsenal, but be sure that the fishing knots you choose are suitable for the kind of fishing that you do.
Top 5 Factors in Locating Bass
Posted by Magic Fishing on Saturday, April 16, 2011
Quite often in both professional and recreational fishing, anglers ask the never ending question of where are the bass located? Being able to locate exactly where the bass are in any lake, stream, river, or what have you is, of course, the very first aspect every good angler should learn and focus upon. Understanding the water and the wheres and whys bass are generally located in certain areas will most assuredly make locating the best place to drop your line much easier and precise.
The Top 5 Most Popular Worm Colors According To The Manufacturers
Posted by Magic Fishing
According to the manufacturers they sell more worms in these colors:
Watermelon-can be used in clear or stained water either one.
Pumpkin-used in moderately clear to stained water.
Junebug-stained water but has been used successfully by some pros in clear water. One of my favorites.
Red Shad-Stained water worm, when I had my tackle store I sold more of these than any other color.
Tequila Sunrise-Stained to muddy water and also great for night fishing.
A decade ago the metallic worms were the fad but now more and more anglers seem to be switching to the natural colors. The manufacturers say black and purple colored worms are selling less and less. I personally have caught most of my bass on a purple color worm.

My Top 5 Favorite Trout Lures
Posted by Magic Fishing
If you have read much of what I have written about Trout fishing, you know that I like to troll the lowland lakes for trout. Many fishermen are content sitting on the bank waiting for the Trout to swim by, but trolling the lowland lakes has always been more productive for me. If you are going to get out on the water and try and bring home some trout, here are my Top 5 Trout Lures when trolling lowland lakes.
Favorite Trout Lure #5 - Fat Spoons
Most of the lowland lakes are pretty stained, so fish have to rely on smell or vibration to find your lure. Wide spoons create more 'thump' in the water and can pull fish from a longer distance, and can be trolled extra slow.
Favorite Trout Lure #4 - Rooster Tail
Always a go-to lure, Rooster Tail spinners can sometimes produce when other lures are not pulling strikes. Colors for me are white or black with at least a little red. Again, the stained water you are fishing is going to limit the colors the fish can see until the last second, so contrasts are important!

The Top Five Things to Do Before You Go Fishing
Posted by Magic Fishing
1. Knowing the location of your trip, is it a lake, a river, or the ocean. This will help you to choose what equipment you will need, so you don't take equipment for fishing in the ocean if you are on a lake, or river, or vice versa.
2. Knowing what your fishing for. If you are fishing in fresh waters, bass and trout, in the ocean, well you name it, you can catch anything from a shark to a squid, that's what makes fishing in the ocean so exciting.
3. Bait, this is the most important thing, without it you won't catch anything. Location is also important for what bait to use. If you fish in lakes and rivers, you can use worms, lures, flies, shiners. In the ocean well you can write a book on all the bait you can use, just make sure you bring plenty of bait, because if you run out, so is your trip.

Top 5 Reasons for Making Your Own Fishing Lures

Fishing is one of the most popular and relaxing ways for one to spend their leisure time. It is also one of the best ways to bond with family and friends. I'll never forget the first time my dad took me fishing, it is one the best memories of my childhood.
Fishing like many other sports and hobbies requires costly equipment. A boat can cost as much as a new car. Fishing poles can cost anywhere from $20-$200. Don't forget about other equipment such as fishing line, weights, a tackle box, and most importantly a vast variety of fishing lures.
Lures are the main factor that decides whether or not you catch a fish. Different fish are attracted to certain types and colors of lures, at certain times of the year. So to be prepared for all these circumstances a fisherman must have an extensive assortment of fishing lures.

Lake Talquin: This lake is located 20 miles west of Tallahassee and in 1927 the Jackson Bluff Dam was constructed on the Ochlockonee River to produce hydroelectric power. The waters held back by the dam formed Lake Talquin. The lake offers quite a few recreational activities such as fishing, nature walks, picnic spots, and boating. The lake is stocked with a variety of fish such as; Largemouth Bass, Shellcracker, Speckled Perch, and Bream. I recommend this lake for a day trip site only as I am unaware of any free campsites in the area.

Rods, Reels, & Line (Combos)
The perfect combo depends on your destination, your fish, and your style. For spin or bait fishing in small streams and brooks, you need light or ultralight gear. Small streams mean small fish, and the Brookies and other smaller trout are best caught with a flexible ultralight rod 4-5 feet in length. Combos include the reel and line pre-spooled for convenience and economy.
If you are aiming for bigger lake or river trout, you need a heavy rig. Heavier rigs with longer rods (6 - 7 ft.) and stronger line allow for longer casting into bigger bodies of water, and are durable enough to haul in a feisty big trout. Spin-cast, enclosed spools, are a good choice, with monofilament line in the 7-14 lb weight range.

Jig & Minnow on the flats
While on the mighty Chippewa flowage in Northern Wisconsin we had spent the entire morning walleye fishing and even though I have fished these waters for years, we were very disappointed in boating only two small walleye. We vertical fished a hole near the dam in blueberry lake, we then headed over to a shallow point in scott lake which was one of my favorite spots and got skunked there also. We headed back to the lodge at Tiger Musky Resort which is where we were staying and had some lunch after an exhausting morning.

Choosing the Right Fishing Line - The Difference Between Monofilament and Multifilament
Posted by Magic Fishing on Thursday, April 7, 2011
Prospective fishermen must have an idea of the fish they want to catch. This factor will normally give an idea of the average size of the fish. Fishing lines are made thicker for the heavier fish (the weight of the fish in comparison to the line is referred to as pound test.) However, from experience, I can attest that they can hold more weight than what is printed on the package. And, from personal experience, the more of a fight the fish puts up the more fun to catch them. However, you have options for how the line is made. Here it is:
Sea Fishing is a Fantastic Hobby

When fishing from the shore at a new venue that I have never fished before, I find the best practice is to visit the mark the day before and check the destination out. For instance visiting on a low tide will enable me to view where any rocks or weed is. If there are anglers at the venue I can sit for hours just watching how the fish the destination. Many tips can be picked up just watching the local's fish; after all it is the locals who should be the experts here.
Fantastic Fishing Holidays in Europe
Posted by Magic Fishing
For holidaymakers with a passion for fishing, or just the desire to do something a little different with their time away, there are some exciting things to do around Europe. Many areas of the continent have prime freshwater and seawater fishing locations where those taking their well-deserved holidays can try their hand at catching everything from the freshest salmon to the largest Mediterranean tuna fish. Tuscany is one of the best fishing destinations for holidaymakers travelling to Italy. The best thing for visitors to do is get a short licence that will allow them to fish for the duration of their stay.
Alternatively it may be best to plan some sea fishing which does not require a licence, or the use of a private lake. Unless holidaymakers are lucky enough to stumble across one that the owners are happy for them to use. Aside from the fishing there is plenty more for holidaymakers to do while they are in North West Italy including taking a visit to the Tuscan cities of Florence and Pisa. Both are must sees and with Pisa being so close to the Italian Coast, visitors can head down for a spot of sea fishing after having a look at the city's famous leaning tower.
Big River Equals Big Fish - Right Or Wrong?
Posted by Magic Fishing on Sunday, March 27, 2011
A large fish simply cannot live in a small river without sufficient depth to contain its bulk. A fish that is exposed in this way for long soon becomes prey for some other creature. That is not to say that such fish cannot pass through shallow sections of their river (or other body of water) though the normal practice would be to wait for the wet season or, at least, some heavy rain. Even a bit of cloudiness to the water can help the fish to hide.

Summer Time Bass Fishing
Posted by Magic Fishing on Friday, March 18, 2011
This is the time of year to change your tactics when fishing those Lakes and ponds in this hot weather. We deal with a lot of moss and grass in the water around here. This is one of the first things I look for when going after a big lunker bass. Bait fishes hang out around the grasses for safety and of course the bass that feed on them are looking for that next meal. I like to fish these areas early in the morning and evenings. We fish with spinners, lipless crank baits, and buzz baits. We fish parallel to those grass and moss beds as to cover as much territory as possible with each cast. Many of the protruding edges along the grass line are the most productive. These areas provide cover for the bass and give them a angle to ambushing baitfish. We catch a large number of bass using plastic jigs and Worms in the middle of the day.
