Sea Fishing is a Fantastic Hobby

Posted by Magic Fishing on Thursday, March 31, 2011

Fishing is a great hobby and I just love sea fishing, the challenge of catching something unique or a fish that puts up a great fight is hard to beat. The great thing about sea fishing is that you never stop learning, what works well one day may not work quite so well the next.
When fishing from the shore at a new venue that I have never fished before, I find the best practice is to visit the mark the day before and check the destination out. For instance visiting on a low tide will enable me to view where any rocks or weed is. If there are anglers at the venue I can sit for hours just watching how the fish the destination. Many tips can be picked up just watching the local's fish; after all it is the locals who should be the experts here.

Fantastic Fishing Holidays in Europe

Posted by Magic Fishing

For holidaymakers with a passion for fishing, or just the desire to do something a little different with their time away, there are some exciting things to do around Europe. Many areas of the continent have prime freshwater and seawater fishing locations where those taking their well-deserved holidays can try their hand at catching everything from the freshest salmon to the largest Mediterranean tuna fish. Tuscany is one of the best fishing destinations for holidaymakers travelling to Italy. The best thing for visitors to do is get a short licence that will allow them to fish for the duration of their stay.
Alternatively it may be best to plan some sea fishing which does not require a licence, or the use of a private lake. Unless holidaymakers are lucky enough to stumble across one that the owners are happy for them to use. Aside from the fishing there is plenty more for holidaymakers to do while they are in North West Italy including taking a visit to the Tuscan cities of Florence and Pisa. Both are must sees and with Pisa being so close to the Italian Coast, visitors can head down for a spot of sea fishing after having a look at the city's famous leaning tower.

Big River Equals Big Fish - Right Or Wrong?

Posted by Magic Fishing on Sunday, March 27, 2011

It is hard to imagine big fish living in a small river. The question is, does a large river necessarily equate to big fish?
A large fish simply cannot live in a small river without sufficient depth to contain its bulk. A fish that is exposed in this way for long soon becomes prey for some other creature. That is not to say that such fish cannot pass through shallow sections of their river (or other body of water) though the normal practice would be to wait for the wet season or, at least, some heavy rain. Even a bit of cloudiness to the water can help the fish to hide.

Popular Saltwater Fish

Saltwater fish tanks are highly popular all around the world. While many people have aquariums, there is something extra special about saltwater fish tanks that people seem to love so much. Perhaps it is the brilliantly clear water. Maybe it is the spectacular coral, or the brilliant accessories that go along with such a tank. While these things are great reasons to have a saltwater fish tank at home, there is nothing like the beautiful and exotic fish that live in these tanks to persuade a person to make the switch to the "miniature ocean" aquariums.

Trout Fishing Flies
If you ever get a chance to go to a fly fishing specialty shop, I highly recommend going; even if you never intend on fly fishing in your life. These shops have in-store fly tying and it is truly an art form. The level of detail and the amount of knowledge needed to tie an effective fly is staggering. Sadly, as we become less engrossed with outdoor activities, fly tying is beginning to become a lost art. There are, thankfully, many books available on how to tie fly's so it won't be delved into in this website specifically.

If you are a fishing enthusiast, there are several methods you can use for fishing providing you with a wide range of options to choose from. The common one is where a fishing rod is used. It is fixed with a line and hook on its end and it remains to be the oldest mode of fishing as it was the first among the methods used in the long gone days of our forefathers. It works through dipping the hook into the water to trap the fish and once it bites the hook then the fisherman pulls it out very fast. This method is not that effective because you only catch one fish at a go thus cannot be relied upon very much.

In spring, just after ice out, Brook trout can be caught in a variety of areas. River fishing and stream fishing can be very productive at this time of year. But you need to keep an eye out for suckers. They will pool at the mouth of rivers where they enter the lake. Their eggs will provide Brookies with food source which will sometimes make you travel further upstream. You will need to move away from their food source to give you a better chance of hooking them.

Spring Fishing for Pike & Musky

Posted by Magic Fishing

It may sound silly to say that Inland Northwest anglers have discovered "Esox" fishing. After all, the "Northern Pike" and its half brothers and sisters, the "Tiger Musky", have been around this neck of the woods for several years. Northern Pike were illegally introduced into the lateral lakes of the Coeur d'Alene river system in the 1970's with a mature pike fishery being pretty much established throughout all of Lake Coeur d'Alene by the 1980's. There is also a well-established Pike population in the Pend Orielle River system. While the debate rages over the negative impacts to the native species and established cold-water fisheries, the fact remains, the Northern Pike is probably here to stay. During a recent visit to Coeur d'Alene, "In-Fisherman" personality, "Al Lindner" was quoted as saying that the next U.S. record pike may very well come from Coeur d'Alene Lake.

Summer Time Bass Fishing

Summer Time Bass Tactics
This is the time of year to change your tactics when fishing those Lakes and ponds in this hot weather. We deal with a lot of moss and grass in the water around here. This is one of the first things I look for when going after a big lunker bass. Bait fishes hang out around the grasses for safety and of course the bass that feed on them are looking for that next meal. I like to fish these areas early in the morning and evenings. We fish with spinners, lipless crank baits, and buzz baits. We fish parallel to those grass and moss beds as to cover as much territory as possible with each cast. Many of the protruding edges along the grass line are the most productive. These areas provide cover for the bass and give them a angle to ambushing baitfish. We catch a large number of bass using plastic jigs and Worms in the middle of the day.

Catfish Fishing Tips

Posted by Magic Fishing on Wednesday, March 16, 2011

I first started fishing catfish in my early childhood with my dad and though I have caught some Blue, and Flathead Catfish, Channel Catfish have always been my main target. I primarily fish them in the Snake and St.Croix Rivers and sometimes the Mississippi too. Wherever I can find a little nook and cranny where the current isn't so fast there always seem to be catfish hiding looking for some fresh bait. Catfish can also be found wherever you can find a rocky bottom to.
The best time to catch catfish is usually after dark until early morning right before the sun comes up, and they always seem to be the most active around a full moon. Catfish also like to hang out in holes where the water is a little deeper. Again, anywhere the current is a little slower and a place where food might gather is great place to find catfish.

Benefits Of Inflatable Fishing Boat

Have you ever considered an inflatable fishing boat, rather than a traditional "boat"? It may be something to consider, if you love to fish, and don't have tons of thousands of dollars to throw around. The boats are extremely portable and as long as you purchase one from a quality manufacturer, your inflatable boat will last for years. There are kayaks, personal pontoon boats, and motor mount boats that all come in inflatable versions. Seriously, there are even inflatable boats that you can mount small engines onto.
Most inflatable fishing boat fold small enough to be transported easily in a car trunk. They weigh around 40 lbs without running boards and are lightweight enough to be carried to nearby waterways. The boats are really versatile. They are equally suitable for fishing, diving, or as a pleasure cruiser. In addition to versatility and despite their large size, the boat is very easy to row.

It was not all that long ago, when choosing angling equipment and gear would have involved travelling to a local store. Today, there is the option of purchasing mail order fishing tackle through the internet. This allows for anglers to have a much greater choice in terms of the type of tackle used, and how much to spend.
In fact, the online medium is desirable for both retailers and consumers of angling gear. An online retailer would have lower operating costs and be able to reach out to a bigger market than those stores that only have a physical presence. A quick search online will provide information on a range of websites that offer tackle, bait, rods, and lines. No matter what type of angling you enjoy, you can be guaranteed that everything you require to land a big catch can be had through mail order.

Benefits of Fishing With a Spinning Reel

Posted by Magic Fishing

A spinning reel is one of the most common reels used when fishing. Fairly inexpensive for even a moderate quality one, plus ease of operation and the ability to place the handle on either side of the reel make it a good choice for most individuals.
Unlike some reels, the spool is completely within view at all times. This allows for easier access when taking off or putting on new line, as well as when line tangling occurs.
What's more, a spinning reel's spool is stationary. Other reels can tangle because their spools move during the cast to let line out. This means that it can continue to release line after the lure has hit the water.
Another benefit to using a spinning reel is that the handle can be turned backwards at the flip of a switch, while the rest of the time being unidirectional.

The Benefits of Fishing With a GPS Chart Plotter

Posted by Magic Fishing

First of all, GPS chartplotters are not fishfinders. They will not tell you where the fish are or sound an alarm to tell you to start fishing. Very simply put, GPS chartplotters are combo units that contain a GPS and a chartplotter.
The GPS is same satellite navigation component that determines your precise location on the Earth. Once your location is detected, it is displayed as a set of longitude and latitude coordinates. A chartplotter is an electronic map of either the coastal waters, inland lakes, or any other navigable waters around the world. The GPS chartplotter we are all most familiar with is the one that sits on the dashboard of our car. We simply input our destination, and the GPS chartplotter (more commonly referred to as only a GPS) plots our course along the roads and tells us when, and which way to turn so we don't get lost. So although you can get a GPS unit without a chartplotter (you can either map your coordinates by hand on a paper map, or input your GPS data to a laptop via specialized software) a chartplotter cannot operate without a GPS unit. So how does this benefit me when I'm out fishing?

The Benefits of Fishing With Homemade Lures

Posted by Magic Fishing

Fishing supplies can be expensive, especially when going after various types of fish. A good fishing pole, tackle box, and permit will make a dent in your pocketbook, and that is not even including the price of lure and different bait you may need. Making your own homemade lures can be an economical way to take pleasure in the sport in addition to providing a cool activity to occupy the cold winter months when fishing is next to impossible.
Imagine the excitement of fishing with something that you crafted to hook a fish. The feeling of achievement would be magnified because of the fact that a fishing lure thought up first in your head, and then crafted by hand attracted a fish enough to take a bite. Creating a homemade lure is quick, uncomplicated, and can be accomplished with many common household objects. As an example, a dried up portion of corn cob can be utilized as an alternative to a bobber, and different colored yarn can be used as a replacement for fake worms.

The 10 Fishing Tackle Essentials Every Angler Needs

Posted by Magic Fishing

Whether you're new to fishing, or have been fishing for years, there are certain items of fishing tackle that you'll need more than others. Here's what you should have to enjoy your fishing more, and hopefully catch more fish.
1. Probably the most important item of fishing tackle is your fishing rod. You'll need to make sure that yours is comfortable enough to use all day, and that it is the right weight and length for you, and the sort of fishing you're doing.
2. Fishing Reels and fly reels are also important. Depending on the sort of fish you're catching, you might want to be able to feed your line by hand, or by using the handle on the reel. Can you use your reel to land a fish even with gloves on, or when your hands are cold and wet?
3. You'll need different sorts of fishing line depending on what you're fishing for. Bigger fish will need a stronger line than smaller fish. You might want to set up several rods or fly reels so that you have the right sort of reel and line no matter what sort of fish are available.
4. Waders are essential if you want to get more involved in your fishing, and actually stand in the river to catch your fish. It's important to choose a good fitting pair that are comfortable, and will keep you warm all day.

Tricks to Big Grouper & Snapper - Crabs

Posted by Magic Fishing on Saturday, March 12, 2011

Grouper and Snapper are a commodity in the fishing industry and every avid angler knows that there is nothing better tasting than fresh grouper or snapper. Hauling them up from 150 feet down is hard enough, and it is a lot harder if you are using the wrong bait and cannot get a fish on the line to begin with. If you are in the right area and there are big fish around, crab is a must have bait if you want to guarantee successful hook-ups.
Grouper and Snapper are natural predators to a wide range of crustaceans and when fishing off of the east coast, there are several smaller crabs that are commonly found in the live bottom area between 90 and 250 feet. If you are over live bottom and marking fish on the sounder, it is a safe bet that if you drop a crab down, you will get some action. There are several key factors that play a major role when determining that "action"; tides, tide of day, type of crab.
First off, tides and time of day. The best bottom bite is always two hours before and two hours after low tide. Depending on the tides and the area you are fishing, trigger fish can be a major nuisance and there is nothing more annoying to an angler than getting trigger bit when searching out large game fish. To avoid getting trigger bit, you must get there early, before the sun comes up.

The Grouper Fishing Tactics That Work Best

Posted by Magic Fishing

When angling for bottom fish, grouper fishing is the most popular sport fishing in the western hemisphere. Because there are so many different types of grouper, fishing for them can be good all the way from the New England states, through the Gulf of Mexico, and down to Brazil. You'll find red, yellowfin, black, gag, and Warsaw grouper to choose from along many coastal regions, and it's rare that there is no abundance of the species. However, beware of the strength and cunning of these fish.
First, you must know a little about bottom fishing, and then plentiful grouper fishing opportunities will follow. Start with a fifty-pound test monofilament line. This will handle just about any grouper that you can possibly encounter. Anything larger becomes a hassle and is also a bit too visible to your target fish. Use a terminal tackle - a sinker, leader, and hook configured with a bank sinker on the end of the leader and a 12-inch-long loop tied abut 18 inches up from there onto which the hook is tied.

How to Choose Fishing Rod and Reels

Posted by Magic Fishing on Thursday, March 10, 2011

Before choosing expensive equipment or tackle, such as a fishing rod, be sure that it will perform the task you ask of it and give you pleasure in its use. There are many factors to take into account, such as the species you hope to catch, and the size, the casting weight and distance involved, line strength and so on. Having determined the suitability of the rod, you then need to ask yourself whether its action is to your liking. For example, you may never have been a fan of fast-tapered rods, but if you need to pick up line at long distance in order to set the hook, you have to compromise, and a fast-tapered rod is the best for this.
Rod actions
There are three types of action. The first, "through action", is where there is a uniformly smooth curve through the blank when playing a fish, and there is no doubt that maximum angling pleasure is to be had with a rod of this type. Where a little more backbone is required, "progressive action" rods come to the fore: with these a modest fish will still give a pleasing bend in the rod but there is a progressive power build-up in the butt to control larger specimens. Lastly, there are "fast taper" rods, that are very stiff in the butt and have very flexible tips. These are designed for ultra-long casting and fast line pick-up.

If you need new fly fishing line, or want to make sure that you've got the right line no matter what you're fishing for, then here's what you need to think about.
1. You'll want to establish what sort of fish you'll be catching with your new line. Will you be sea fishing? Will you be catching salmon or trout? Will you be fishing abroad, and be catching different fish to what you're used to here?
2. Knowing where you'll be fishing can help too. If you regularly fish the same spots, you'll know what sort of fish are to be found there, and how big they are. This will help you to determine what size and strength of fishing line you'll need.

Monofilament
Mono is the most common line used on the market today. There are basically two types of monofilament fishing line, monofilament limp or more commonly referred to as XL. This is a great line to use for casting and general fishing techniques, and the diameter of the line is the smallest of the two. XT or extra taught/abrasion restart line is best utilized for trolling or rough water conditions where your line comes in contact with a lot of obstacles such as weeds, rocks, stumps, and logs. These lines are very versatile and have a high stretch factor to consider, which an essential advantage for landing that largemouth bass.

Modern monofilament lines are a vast improvement on those of even a few years ago. Diameter has decreased and breaking strains increased. Some of the new fluorocarbon lines are now virtually invisible in water.
Monofilaments
Whatever main line you use, there is one rule that applies at all times -change your lines regularly. All mono lines deteriorate in time, especially if continually exposed to the sun, and you should renew your lines at least three times a season.
The three monofilament main lines recommended are Drennan Specimen Plus, Berkeley Trilene XT and Sufix Synergy. Specimen Plus is the all-round main line in all breaking strains, but when you require greater abrasion resistance, the Trilene or Sufbc lines are excellent.

Big Carp Fishing Bait Tricks Using Worms and Natural Attractors!

Posted by Magic Fishing on Wednesday, March 9, 2011

Fish over forty pounds and more are caught on worm baits of various kinds; so to exploit something a little different read on now and reap big rewards!
I caught my first ever carp around 1975 - on a worm for bait. Things in my carp fishing have changed very much since that time but worm baits of various kinds just keep catching. Being in horticulture it has been easy to get hold of enough worms to make homemade boilies and ground baits based on them. I have over the decades confirmed that some worms and worm products are far superior to others!
Unfortunately due to rising costs, the lobworm extracts often available today are synthetically-based and so are missing all those stimulatory amino acids in the profiles and ratios that carp love so much in lobworms. (Do check with your supplier if this is the case!) Most usually in reality these additives are composed of synthetic flavours, taste enhancers such as ribonucleotides and amino acids complexes etc, which despite trying; do not replicate the ideal palatability of the genuine natural product!

Best Homemade and Natural Trout Fishing Bait

Posted by Magic Fishing

Trout have a wide variety of natural bait that they prey on and there is also some good homemade bait as well. There are several types of insects that trout love. By taking the time to study the natural prey in the area in which you plan to fish can bring you a great deal more luck with your trout fishing outing than those of your artificial fly fishing buddies. Knowing what trout feed on in the area you plan to fish puts you ahead in the game. The old style trout fishing homemade baits work pretty well to, but I have better luck with it on when I do tie line fishing.
Some types of natural baits are grasshoppers, may flies, nymphs, crayfish, crickets, minnows, and nightcrawlers. These are all terrific baits to use. The advantages of these baits is that, say in murky waters there smell alone will attract trout. They are just what trout know and love to eat, that's the importance of knowing what the natural prey is for trout in your area of fishing.

Many surf fisherman use artificial lures and plugs, but after many years of trial and error, I believe that natural baits will always catch many more fish. Detailed here are two surf rigs that have taken more fish than any other.
The High-Low Rig
To tie the high low surf rig you will need about a 5 foot length of 40-60lb monofilament leader. At one end of your leader attach a weight snap. The choice of weight is a personal preference, pyramid sinkers work well in the surf, but if a heavy current is running a sputnik style weight would be better. 12 inches up from your snap swivel tie two dropper loops roughly 15 inches apart for your hooks. Shorter dropper loops tend to work much better for bite detection. Size and type of hook are again a matter of preference, but if you use circle hooks the fish will hook themselves and stand less chance of being gut hooked. 15 inches above the top loop tie on a barrel swivel to connect to your main line. Using the high-low rig will help keep the bait off the bottom, and has the advantage of having two baited hooks in the water.

Fishing Tackle Review: Greys Sea Spin Lure Fishing Rod

Posted by Magic Fishing

As an avid lure fisherman, I'm always looking for new gear. My tackle box is full of things that I've bought over the years, some good, some not so good. I've a special weakness for rods, though. I think the right rod can make all the difference between a successful fishing excursion and a failed one. A rod I particularly like is the Sea Spin lure fishing rod from Greys, a well-known name in fishing tackle in the UK. Here's a quick rundown on what's become an essential piece of tackle for me.
About the Greys Sea Spin Lure Fishing Rod
The folks at Greys got this one right. This is a great rod of all types of shore-based lure fishing. The Sea Spin is up to the task, even for bottom fishing. Most anglers know that the best way to land a fish that's fighting hard is to get full control of the situation as early in the fight as possible.
